Being Different!

– “They say you’re a legend.
You’re so successful.
But you’re so different.
Your aims. Your ways.
How did you manage that?”
– “What’s the challenge, you think?”
– “People. They don’t support different ones.”
– “Have you watched those TV programs?
The titles go like ‘My country’s got talent’.
You show up on stage.
You get a minute or two, tops.
To display your game.
You get to work. It’s drastically different.
Most people don’t understand
what you’re trying to do.
And most people don’t want to
wait for two minutes.
They boo. Some even curse.
Even the judges and anchors hint at you
to quit it and go mop in the corner.
It’s not easy to feel it all on your back.
But you don’t stop. You don’t waver.
You keep going. And suddenly,
they figure it out. And then things change.
The crowd goes silent. You finish the job.
They see something they never saw before.
They’re dumbstruck.
Then a judge stands up; starts clapping.
And the crowd goes wild. You’re their hero.”
– “Yes.”
– “What I did wasn’t gonna be over
in two minutes. Not even two years.
I knew it. I anticipated it. I was ready for it.
I never asked for their understanding
in the first place.”
– “I like that attitude.”
– “It worked only because
there was grit behind it.
I knew I could do without their understanding;
only because I knew what I was doing.
There was study. Observation. Adaptation.
There was acceptance for repeated failure.
And for mockery; derision; insults.
And a gigantic will to keep going.
No matter what happens.
You can show your magic in two minutes
only when you put efforts of two lifetimes
behind it. You’re a legend when
you can be a leech for success.”
